Pompton Turnpike is another well known chart from the Charlie Barnet band and the original arrangement was penned by Billy May. The use of lip-slurs in the reeds would later be a trademark for the Billy May Orchestra. This chart has, at its heart, a wonderful call and response duet between Trumpet (May) and Soprano sax (Barnet) which we have written out in full. May's original arrangement was scored for six reeds (SAATTB) though we have adapted the section to ASTTB, making the chart playable by a regular section. If you wish to reproduce May's original intent of the chart, the clarion quality of the Soprano sax is important to have.
